![]() With a valid rail pass, you just hop on any covered train that doesn't require reservations. But it can be smart to buy in advance for certain trains and destinations, especially if your dates are set and you don't want to risk a specific train journey selling out, or if you're hoping to land an advance-purchase discount. Unlike rail passes, it's generally easy to buy point-to-point train tickets right at the station (whereas most rail passes aren't widely available in Europe). Bottom line: buy your train tickets direct from the provider or face the risk of complete loss.While a rail pass is often the smart way to ride the rails in Europe, sometimes it makes sense to purchase individual train tickets between specific destinations (either instead of, or in addition to, a rail pass - see my tips for figuring out whether a pass pencils out for your trip). This would be consumer fraud under US law but because it’s a British app, you can pay hundreds and receive nothing. I’m now having to spend hours figuring out how to apply for Thalys mediator and bring a claim in the EU, and all because Trainline refuses to provide any information. I had to pay hundreds more to complete my trip. ![]() All for a refund that Thalys own materials say we’re entitled to. Making matters worse, Trainline refused to provide any documentation, explanation why it was rejected, communications with Thalys, nothing. Thalys says you must apply for the refund through Trainline because that’s where the tickets were purchased Trainline then sent me an email that Thalys rejected the refund - even though I have screenshots and communications from Thalys telling me I was entitled to it. So I did Trainline says they’ll talk to Thalys. When you click through the refund on the app, it says you must contact customer service. I spent thousands on it in Europe, including $600 tickets for a Thalys train that was cancelled.
